Patient engagement is both a tremendous challenge along with a great opportunity for mobile health solutions providers. Health care providers, hospitals and physicians, will be required under Stage 2 of Meaningful Use according to The Affordable Care Act,  “give at least half of their patients the ability to view and download their own medical records through online portals or personal health records, up from 10 percent in Stage 1.

But more significantly, 5 percent of patients actually have to log in to those portals or healthcare providers will lose out on Medicare and Medicaid bonus payments.” (Please refer to the mobihealthnews link to the article below for details) Health Care Services IT Departments will need to have Electronic Health Records (EHR) in place, accessible, and front line health care clinicians trained and adapt in encouraging patients to log in and use the portals. Without reaching established usage thresholds, providers lose Medicare and Medicaid bonus payments.

Mobile health apps and complete communications systems solutions will be the tools hospitals, physicians, and health care workers need to have to achieve this level of patient engagement. Here you will find four resources that describe the conversation around the patient engagement challenge and opportunity.
